Techniques To Build A Strong Website Structure With Internal Links

Internal links have the same effect as external links (backlinks). The difference is, the website owner can control 100% of the number, location and structure.

Building internal links means building a website structure. And to build a strong structure it is not enough to rely solely on 'related posts' and links in the navigation menu. There are techniques to make your website stronger.

About internal links

In order not to misunderstand, I first explain briefly what it means.

Internal link is a link ( link ) that leads from one page to another page on the same website. Meanwhile, external links or backlinks come from outside the website.

There are 3 main purposes of links on the website:

Make visitor navigation easier

Establish a website structure

Distribute authority to other pages of the website

So, if on your website there is 1 page that has high authority (because of backlinks), you can distribute its power to other pages. This is the importance of internal links.

Good website structure

I mentioned earlier that one of its functions is to form the structure of the website. The reason is because pages that get lots of internal links will be considered as staple pages by search engines. Structure website Each circle represents a website page and the line represents a link. The bigger the circle, the greater the authority of the page (because there are many links).

A structure like this is good because it shows clearly which content is main and which content is related and supports the main content. Thanks to this, visitors and search engines can easily explore the site.

Why 'related posts' aren't enough

Many websites, especially blogs and online stores only rely on related posts that are generated automatically to build internal links.

This method is not good enough for building a website structure.

Because the links in related posts are generated automatically by the system, you don't have the power to determine which pages are the most important on your website.

As a result, the structure of the website looks like this (rough estimate):

Poor Structure

With related posts, all content is equal. There is no content that is considered important, there is no supporting content. This is because one page links other pages without weight and with the same quantity.

If you only use related posts, it means you are just the samerely on backlinks to determine page priority. Stronger with websites that rely on internal and external.

In addition, visitors also visit pages on related posts less frequently than manual internal links.

Main content

Intentionally or unintentionally, your website must have some main content.

The main content is usually content-heavy, the creation process is the most time-consuming, and you feel the most proud of the content.

If you don't feel like you have the main content. Check your Analytics and see which pages are the most visited besides the homepage. Make these pages the main page. Increase and re-develop the contents.

Furthermore, other content that you create after this should be a derivative, further explanation, or a side view of the main content that can be linked back by internal links.

This main content will have a high chance to appear on Google site links.

Internal link building tips

Here are the ways you can build internal links manually without using any plugins to create a good structure.

1. Insert in content

The best form of links is between sentences in the content. First, because it looks natural. Second, visitors are more interested in clicking. Third, be rich in keywords.

The link to a certain page appears at most once so as not to disturb the reader. Better to post links to 2-3 different pages in 1 article than 2-3 to the same page.

2. Use anchor text

Just like backlinks, use anchor text to link to each internal link. Do not use generic phrases like "click here", "this page", etc. for internal links unless you have to.

Also, don't use phrases that are overly optimized. Insert it into the sentence naturally so that the sentence is still pleasant to read but still describes your link.

3. Avoid links to the following pages

Do not link to the homepage from within the content because there are already many links on your website that go to the homepage. Do not also post a link to your own page, it's useless.

Other pages that you don't need to optimize for search engines such as contacts, about, and regulations also don't need to be linked.

4. Link only relevant pages

The internal link that you post must be to a page with a similar topic. For example, page 1 on fried tofu recipe, page 2 on fried tempeh recipe, page 3 on motorcycle.

You can link pages 1 and 2, but never link pages 3 to 1 and 2.

5. Dofollow

Hati-ha

Don't put rel = "nofollow" for all the links on your web page. Nofollow links are considered not to distribute page authority to other pages, so it will be useless in SEO.

6. Don't disturb the comfort

Anything you do on your website should not disturb the comfort of the reader, including internal links.

That is, do not post too many links and do not post irrelevant links.

How much is too much? It depends on the length of your article.

7. Limit the number of  site-wide links

Site-wide links are links that appear on all pages of your website, for example links in header, sidebar, and footer navigation. Most of these links will not have a positive impact, it will cause your structure to be less than good and annoy visitors.

Closing

This is the technique of building internal links manually to get a good structure. In the process of creating a website, anything that is done manually usually gives better results than completely automated
